It is a misconception that black women cannot grow their hair long; the issue is actually retaining the length once it has grown. Shedding and breaking hair create the impression that your hair is not growing. You can avoid both shedding and breakage by using proper care.
Keep your scalp clean. Shampoo your hair and scalp with a sulfate-free shampoo when it becomes oily or coated with styling products. The oil and products can clog your pores. Sulfate-free shampoos are not harsh on the hair and scalp. Do not damage your scalp by scratching with your fingernails while shampooing your hair. Instead, use a gentle circular motion with your fingertips to increase blood circulation to the scalp.
Add moisture to your hair; dry hair easily breaks. Increase your water intake to build moisture internally. Always use a deep conditioner after shampooing. For best results, cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer with the temperature set on Medium for 15 to 20 minutes. The heat will help the conditioner penetrate the hair.
Your hair strands are composed of mostly protein, so use a protein treatment on your hair to increase its strength and prevent breakage. Perform a protein treatment every 2 or 3 weeks on chemically straightened hair. Applying an egg can add protein to and strengthen your hair. Mix one egg with 1 tbsp. water and work through your hair. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and rinse thoroughly after 15 to 20 minutes. Don't sit under a hooded dryer with heat--it's not easy to wash scrambled egg from your hair.
Comb your hair with a seamless wide-toothed comb, as seamless comb do not snag and break your hair. Fine-toothed combs pull out your hair when combing and detangling.
Increase the time between your chemical relaxer applications if you chemically straighten your hair. Relaxers used improperly can weaken your hair and damage your hair and scalp. Always neutralize the relaxer and wash out all chemicals thoroughly. Keep the relaxer on the new hair growth only. You may wish to have a professional stylist perform all chemical services.
Trim your damaged ends. Damaged and split ends can travel up your hair shaft and cause breakage. Prevent them by following Steps 1-5. Once you have healthy ends, protect them from harsh weather and rubbing against rough fabrics, such as wool, by wearing an updo.
